With the recent announcement of the departure of Provost Carol Fierke, Texas A&M President Michael K. Young has appointed Dr. Shawn Gibbs to lead the university’s response to COVID-19.

As dean of the university’s School of Public Health, Dr. Gibbs has already been closely involved with the planning and implementation of programs that have helped minimize the spread of COVID-19 during the summer and fall terms at Texas A&M.

One of the nation’s leading experts in the disruption of highly infectious diseases, Dr. Gibbs has a long and impressive track record of collaborating with a wide range of health authorities and academic leaders to promote the health and safety of university communities.

“From the very beginning, Dr. Gibbs has played a vital role in our response to the coronavirus,” said President Michael K. Young. “His extraordinary knowledge and expertise have been essential to the success of our efforts so far, and I have great confidence that his collaborative leadership will help overcome any challenges that may arise in the future.”

With this new responsibility, Dr. Gibbs will continue to work closely with Chris Meyer, associate vice president for the Office of Safety and Security, and other key administrators to safely and responsibly advance Texas A&M’s mission of education and research.

In addition to a website on COVID-19 Guidance, Texas A&M also maintains FAQs* about coronavirus policies.
